Working effectively with family carers enhances work with clients for a range of employees in the community services and health industries. Carers Victoria has developed a range of short courses and professional development workshops for service providers. These courses and workshops:

Training schedule

The following short courses and workshops may be scheduled at Carers Victoria in 2008. Refer to our events calendar for dates and times. All sessions may also be run on or off site for organisations according to demand. Please contact us indicating the courses or workshop/s you are interested in.

Customised training

We specialise in customising workshops to be relevant to an organisation’s workplace training needs. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and costs and discounted costs for groups of 8 or more

All ½ day Workshops 9.30am –12.30pm or 1.30pm – 4.30pm $66 per person (including GST)

Refund policy

î

No refunds are provided for training that has been delivered.

î

If the provider cancels the course then a refund of all fees is paid to the student or client unless satisfactory alternative arrangements can be made.

î

Fees will be refundable upon 5 working days notice of a cancellation prior to commencement date of a course.
î Less than 5 working days notice of cancellation will incur a $20 fee per person. This fee will support costs incurred for materials preparation, administration, venue hire, catering, etc as per arrangement. Maximum charge per organisation is $100.

î

Cancellations will only be accepted if they are received in writing (email, fax, post or hand delivered).

Details of Professional Development Workshops

î Working with ageing carers of adults with a disability – 2 Days

This two day workshop examines issues specific to older carers and provides practical knowledge and skills in family focused care and succession planning for case managers, respite coordinators and facilitators of disability services.

 

î Carer loss and grief – 1 Day

This workshop provides a practical guide for staff aimed at increasing understanding of unrecognised loss and grief. The workshop also explores a range of strategies that can be utilised in supporting family carers with loss and grief issues.

 

î Carer needs assessment – 1 Day

The aim of this workshop for assessment practitioners is to promote inclusion of carers needs in assessment. It explores existing assessment models and policy and provides a carer inclusive model. It also explores the impact of values upon assessment practice and provides strategies for carer sensitive practices.

 

î Carers and discharge planning – 1 Day

The aim of this workshop for hospital social workers, charge nurses and discharge planners is to promote inclusion of carers in discharge planning. It explores the consequences of not planning with carers and presents a carer inclusive approach in line with the Victorian Effective Discharge Strategy.

 

î Working with Indigenous carers – 1 Day

This workshop is designed for ‘mainstream’ service providers with the aim of assisting staff in improving service delivery to Indigenous clients. The impacts of historical practices and institutional racism are examined, together with the issues and support strategies specific to the Indigenous carer.

 

î Working with culturally diverse carers – 1 Day

This is a one day professional development workshop for staff aimed at increasing knowledge and skills in working with carers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Content includes:

The impact of culture on beliefs and values about caring
Strategies for working effectively with culturally diverse carers

 

î The impacts of caring on children and young people – 1 Day

This workshop for teachers, school nurses, youth workers and other professionals explores issues and support strategies for children and young people with caring responsibilities for parents, siblings and others.

 

î The consumer, the carer and you (mental health) – 1 Day

This workshop for mental health professionals explores issues and strategies in balancing the needs, rights and responsibilities of consumers, carers and mental health staff.

 

î The impact of caring for a person with cognitive impairment – ½ Day

This workshop explores the emotional issues, challenges, family impacts and relationship changes in the journey of carers of people with dementia and other cognitive impairment.

 

î Promoting carer health and wellbeing – ½ Day

The focus of this workshop is on the barriers to selfcare that carers experience. The workshop also explores the beliefs and values about caring and the use of respite and how these can impact on carer health and wellbeing.

 

î Working with the media – ½ Day

The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with tips and strategies when undertaking media work. Participants will be provided with information on writing press releases and undertaking media interviews.

 

î Self care for care workers – ½ Day

The focus of this workshop is on some of the common hazards and stresses of “care work” and how these can impact on staff health and wellbeing. The workshop explores practical strategies for individual workers as well as organisations in reducing stress and increasing job satisfaction.

 

î Supporting carers in transition – ½ Day

The focus of this workshop is for staff, particularly those offering residential care and respite on understanding the stages of care giving, pathways into care, and exploring the impacts of change and transition on the lives of carers.

 

î Working with groups – 1 Day

This workshop is ideal for workers who want to improve their knowledge and skills in working with groups. Modules include the Life stages of groups, Programming for groups and Group dynamics

 

î Presentation skills – ½ Day

The focus of this workshop is on developing and delivering a short presentation. Workers who want to improve their knowledge and skills about presenting information to diverse audiences would benefit from this workshop.
